Here is a handy guide to the different types of special pages you can find on Metawiki.
By default, all pages are classified under the hidden "_default" system category. This covers the landing page and the vast majority of Metawiki articles.
These page types are for exceptions to the rule.
Note: This list is subject to changes, removals, simplifications, expansions, and any/all other edits at any time.

Top Level Categories (TLCs)
Meta:
Used for pages involving Metawiki itself, such as policies and public records.
Navigational TLCs
Note: These navigational TLC pages will often have some overlap on the things they list.
List:
Used for pages that contain lists of all articles that fit into a relevant category.
Hub:
Essentially "Super Lists"; used for pages that contain a list of all lists that fit into a relevant category.
Portal:
Essentially "Super Hubs"; used for pages that contain a list of all hubs that fit into a relevant category.
Gate:
Essentially a "Super/Central Portal"; used to list all portals, hubs, lists, and pages across the site. Highest navigational TLC.
Research/subjective pages
Interview:
Hosts an interview with a relevant person or group while doing research.
Investigation:
Hosts a detailed breakdown of an investigative/research process on a certain topic(s).
Op-Ed:
Hosts a subjective opinion piece, editorial, or essay on a certain topic(s).
Resource:
Hosts resources(s) used for researching a certain topic(s).
Metawiki Systems
Component:
Used for site-wide components that can be applied to pages.
Fragment:
Used for page fragments, usually when a page exceeds the Wikidot character limit.
Pseudo:
Used for the pseudo-tag function's page.
Protected-Temp:
Pages that are temporarily protected due to vandalization targetting.
Protected-Indef:
Pages that are protected indefinitely due to extreme vandalization targetting.
Theme:
Used for the Metawiki site theme.
Fum:
Used for fair use media (FUM) hosting pages, with proper citations and attribution needed.
Template:
Used for pages that host templates for infoboxes, page layouts etc. Not to be confused for "_template" pages, which are made to provide built-in notices for pages using a Top Level Category prefix.
Disambig:
Used for redirect pages when an ambiguous URL is entered in the search bar.
Wikidot Systems
Nav:
For the topbar, side-bar, and (when/if it's fixed) search-bar.
Forum:
For forum pages.
System:
For pages that utilize Wikidot automations.
Admin:
Pages only accessible and editable by Metawiki administration.
